James Varghese, Director of Investments
James is an investment manager and corporate finance specialist with 25 years experience in the Indian and South Asian SME and microfinance sector. He is a Certified Internal Auditor and Chartered Accountant.
Prior to joining Chilasa, he was the Chief Investment Officer for a USD$100m microfinance and social impact investment firm. James was responsible for operations, as well as due diligence and audit for fund lending and investments in financial services, food and agro, energy, water, housing, health and hygiene projects in excess of USD$60m.
Previously, he was Executive Director for a start-up microfinance institution (MFI) building a loan and grant portfolio to USD$10M and responsible for 200 staff. The MFI focused on small loans to help poor rural and urban families start micro businesses. James was also responsible for a USD$1.2m USAID small holder farming project in Uttar Pradesh involving 15’000 farmers. The impact of the project increased farm yields 25% and household income by 15%.
Earlier in his career James was CFO for an Indian project engineering and services group where he restructured financial and audit operations leading to major savings for the company.
